BIRD WATCHING

Lower Green Farmhouse is not far from the well known and loved marshes at Cley and is a bird watchers haven with many varied and rare species and a wonderful new visitors centre offering breathtaking views across the Marsh to the sea. Further along the coast is Titchwell Marsh one of the RSPB most visited centre in the UK.

Just in Lower Green itself the barn owls swoop across the fields early morning and evening.

BEACHES

There are wonderful sandy beaches all along the North Norfolk coast from Cromer through to Hunstanton. Wells for a tradional day out, Blakeney and Stiffkey for a more challenging walk and Holkham for sand and trees. The marshes and creeks can be very challenging and must be treated with respect and due regard for tide and weather conditions. Its wise to seek advise from the local coastguard before venturing too far off the beaten track.

SAILING

Blakeney and Brancaster are the traditional sailing bases but boats are all along the coast. Wells even has its own sailing school as well as all the working fishing boats and pleasure boats. A must for tourists is the trip to Blakeney Point to see the seals with Temples, Bishops and Beans running regular trips from Morston or Blakeney.

CYCLING

Norfolk is flat - don't believe it!  From Hindringham you can bike for miles along relatively easy, quiet rural lanes and tracks exploring locally or along the National Cycle Route No. 1 which for the more ambitious goes through nearby Wells and Walsingham. It is possible to cycle through to Norwich or beyond along the miles of abandoned railway lines. Cycle hire is available in Wells.

PENSTHORPE

Just inland, Pensthorpe Waterfowl Park near Fakenham, offers a fantastic day out with one of the largest collections of endangered and exotic waterbirds in the UK and is set in 500 acres with miles of nature trails through woodland and ancient meadows and along lakes. The T.V. programme Springwatch was recently filmed from here.

THURSFORD

Lower Green is ideally situated for the nearby Thursford Collection which has probably one of the best collection of Organs, Fairground Rides, Traction Engines, Steam Engines and Steam Rollers in the UK. Its well known for the hugely popular Christmas Spectacular show which matches any show in London.

Please note we are usually very busy for the Thursford Christmas Spectacular Show so booking well in advance is advisable.

THE MUCKLEBURGH COLLECTION

This is situated along the coast at Weybourne and is the largest private collection of tanks and military vehicles in the UK. As well as static exhibits it offers working displays and rides.

THE POPPY LINE

Using mainly preserved steam engines and carriages the North Norfolk Railway runs from Sheringham to Holt. The bygone country station is at Weybourne and is a favourite with filmakers.

Also we are very near the Wells and Walsingham Light Railway which has the longest 10¼ gauge railway in the world. A talking timetable can be found on 01328 710631.

A short drive away is the Bure Valley Railway and the Mid-Norfolk Railway.

THE BROADS

The Norfolk Broads is now the UK’s largest nationally protected wetland and an important area for wildlife. The Broads were formed when people dug for peat in Medieval times and then they were later flooded. The Victorians used them for transporting heavy loads but nowadays they are here purely for pleasure and passengers are the boats’ main cargo. A holiday in the Norfolk Broads is like a whole new world. And it’s easy. No complicated locks to manoeuvre, just 125 miles of navigable waterways with plenty of places for you to moor up and hop out to explore pretty villages and market towns, or to stop at a welcoming pub to set you up for the rest of the day.

TOWNS AND VILLAGES

Holt, nearby Georgian town with individual shops, galleries and cafes.

Fakenham, a small market town (large market on Thursday) with good selection of shops and cafes.

Wighton is a pretty village where the well known Mrs Temples Cheese is made from the Temple farm dairy herd.

Wells, a small traditional sea-side town with typical sea-side shops and amusements as well as town shops and cafes. Also has the fishing boats landing their catch off the quay and children fishing for crabs from the quayside.

Cromer, Sheringham and Hunstanton our larger, traditional sea-side towns with the usual shops and amusements.

Walsingham with its religious centre and medieval buildings, shops and of course the pilgrimage to the famous Shrine of our Lady.

Cley, quaint, narrow road and cobbled paths leading to speciality shops, galleries and cafes. Cley Spy a must to visit.

Norwich, our fine city is under an hour away with its wonderful cathedral and castle and historic buildings. It mixes old historic cobbled streets, buildings and shops with the modern shopping malls and multi storey carparks. In the city centre an unusual market is present every day.

The area around North Norfolk is criss-crossed with footpaths, bridle paths and tracks ideal for walking, driving or cycling. It has plenty of interesting sites, pretty picnic areas, local pubs and tea-shops.

ORDNANCE SURVEY

We recommend the orange Ordnance Survey Explorer map no. 251 for around Hindringham area and nos. 250 and 252 for surrounding coast areas.

The coast road is a wonderfully, pretty and exciting road to drive along stopping at various places to explore the salt marshes, bird watch, walk the North Norfolk Coast path or sit and relax and enjoy the fresh local crabs and sea food.
